Quote :
Research carried out by the Exeter-based Peninsula Medical School suggests parents of children with Down's syndrome are wasting money on costly supplements which do nothing to improve their condition.Professor Stuart Logan, who carried out the research, said five years of study into the impact of antioxidant and nutrient supplements costing families £25 a month had shown no positive effects of the medication. Well, that's research for ya. They keep changing their minds! Unless I've been misreading it:

Links to abstracts of research into the effects supplements

and this has got to mean something:
Quote :
The researchers are now focusing on determining what anti-oxidant therapy may be effective and how such therapy may affect the disease at its various stages. They are also mapping out the progression of Alzheimer's, to further determine how it progresses.
(taken from Early Stages of Alzheimer's Disease Identified in Downs Syndrome)

oooo too much information, my brain is swimming!

OMG Cas, I didn't get much past the first paragraph!!! What a negative site Shocked maybe it's all true??? but I don't want to know about it (just clariying, I don't mean "why did you post that" just that what they are saying is a bit like the information you get when our kids are born! all doom and gloom scare mongering" )

Yes I didn't make it too far either seem like a lot of crap to me. I read the bit about "suffering with down syndrome" I hate that term I don’t see that Aden suffers at all.
I stopped reading after the life expectancy at 70. When you read 70 years in that text it's scary makes you feel like their life will be suddenly cut too short. A family history of Heart disease isn’t' great odds either my mums side has a life expectancy of woman living between 55 and 65 years so 70 is good. Wink

I don't know. I actually saw the title as quite hopeful because I see diseases as being treatable whereas I see genetic conditions as being non-fixable. I particularly like paragraph 8 that says,
Quote :
. Fixed conditions cannot be made better (except for surgical procedures, etc.); we can see a cessation of symptoms in patients with Down Syndrome when using TNI and related therapies. This is a reversal of the disease process that could not occur if: a) Down syndrome was not a disease or b) if it was simply a fixed condition.
(emphasis mine)

I think with anything, we need to read it with a grain of salt because having done a smidgen of research myself, I know what some of the parameters are and how they can affect the results. I think at the end of the day, we just need to love our kids and treat them as 'normal' because that's more important than anything else.
