A doctor and father to be ends up delivering their babies. After the first twin is born, his wife starts having more contractions, and the second baby is born. The husband sedates her and has the baby taken away because it has Down Syndrome. He later tells the wife it was stillborn. He asks the nurse to take the baby to an instition just out of town. Instead she takes the baby home and raises it as her own.

My mums friend has recommended this book. I just bought a copy on ebay today. I'll let you know how I like it.

I liked this book too. The interaction between the young woman with DS and her twin brother when they finally meet up was lovely.

So Buggsie did you finish reading this book? If so did you like it? I lent my copy to Aden's mum and im thinking that because i read it before i had Amarli, I'm going to read it again when Cathy is finished with it as i might see it in a different light now. Smile
Did you also know that the movie they made about this book is being shown on tv in the US on the 12th April, I'm hoping i can get someone there to tape it for me and then we all can watch it clap

I read this book and loved it.

There was one bit where she is playing with the butterflies in the park and I think it actually changed the way I viewed my daughter. Despite describing usual characteristics of DS that can be seen as negative (pudgy hands etc) I found it presented a beautiful picture of the little girl. Made me look at my own daughter and think 'you are just beautiful' which quite frankly she is ;-)

I read it as a part of a bookclub and funnily enough everyone but me found it 'sad'..

The Buffalo News - Life - 1 Apr 2008

Quote :

It takes just an instant to radically change a life.
And in the case of The Buffalo News Book Club’s April selection, “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter,” one instant dramatically changes not just one life, but the lives of two families.
The novel opens dramatically: As a blizzard rages outside, twins are born to a Kentucky doctor and his wife, delivered by the doctor/husband himself. But when he sees his newborn daughter for the first time, he makes a split-second decision to have his nurse whisk her away to an institution that cares for children with Down syndrome...

Oh wow! I just looked up the link for the movie preview, and Dermot Mulroney plays the father. I'm not sure if I could handle seeing him in that role, he is one of my favorite actors.

Cathy thanks for posting the clip. I watched it. I sent shivers up my spine.

I actually haven't read the book yet! The start seems very slow, and I can't get into it. I was thinking, I might try to buy the movie from America and my dh can convert it. But now I don't know if I want to see it scratch

I still can't bring myself to read this book...for some reason I think it might upset me scratch

Everytime I go to the bookshop I pick it up and then I put it down again!

Everyone I know that has read it says it's sad, but I think the sadness is not really anything to do with the little girl with DS, more with the rest of the family.

Might get the courage to read it one day soon Smile

Oh and I read "Expecting Adam" and to be honest, the author annoyed the crap out of me lmao Her writing style, her whingy, whiney ways...the whole thing annoyed me. I read it when Gracie was quite little though, maybe I should have another look at it one day.

I agree, i hated this book. I sent it to Aden's mummy (Cathy) and she hates it too. I just wanted to strangle the mother and her choice of words. I couldnt even be bothered trying to read it again it was so hard to finish the first time.
I have a copy of "just call me Ellie" if anyone wants to read it, its about an Aussie family and its a great book.

I just read this book and loved it. The girl with DS was portrayed in a positive light I thought. Her "mum" gave her the chance to do anything she wanted, but understood it would take her longer than other people.
The sadness in my mind came from the other family. Having lost a child soon after birth I could relate to the mother's grief and the way the marriage collapsed (as mine did!).
I totally lost the day yesterday as I just sat a read - stopping only to change and feed Wil. Guess I'll be busy catching up today... Cleaner MIL is arriving from Wales in 5 weeks....

I did read this book finally! Yes, it had its sad moments, but yes, I think it was more to do with the others than the actual girl herself. Overall a very positive story and enjoyable read. Now I want to see the movie (but will make sure I have tissues handy!)

I was really disappointed with the movie,i know they can't put a whole book in a movie but i felt it didn't really tell the story at all.
