| Hi All, I have just joined your forum and I look forward to lots of discussions with you all regarding our beautiful babies! Let me introduce myself first - My name is Kathy and I have been married to Adrian for 20 years. We have 3 teenagers (Matthew 18, Caitlin 17 and Michael 13). We also have 2 children with Down syndrome (Lachlan is 2 and Grace is 19mths). We adopted Lachlan 2 years ago and Grace 8mths ago - we call them our bonus babies. Lachlan is a VERY active little boy who is continually giving his mother heart attacks. His latest is wandering. I am chasing an alarm (or something similar) that will sound when is goes further than a set distance away (out of the yard etc). I would love something that he could wear. Has anyone found anything similar to this and if so where did they purchase it from? Grace is progressing really well. She is now 5 weeks off continuous oxygen, so life is MUCH easier now. Since coming off her O2 she has become VERY mobile and active - Lochie has taught her very well!! Look forward to getting to know you all Take care Kath ) | |

| Welcome Kathy cant wait to see pics of Lachlin and Grace. I think K-mart had something for kids like you want but Lachlin might be abit to young for it. I think its called a GECKO and is sold where the mobile phones are, im sure it has somesort of tracker in it but it also allows a child to ring their home from it too. ..........Robyn | |

| Hey Kathy and welcome! Looking forward to getting to know your family better.
My #3 is my wanderer. He's 3.5 and hasn't got DS! When we were in America we heard about a 'pager' type thing that you are talking about. The kid wears a small unit and when it goes out of a certain range, the parent's unit alarms. I'm positive you would find something you could use in a 'gadget' shop. It may not be a purpose built thing or look particularly 'cutsie' but should hopefully do the job! I'll ask around if anyone knows of something...
Catch you soon Cas | |

| Hi Kath and welcome I have lived through two wanderers, first was Cleo, our eldest child and then Andy, who has DS. With Andy I never found anything suitable to track him, but bear in mind this was around ten years ago now. The watch thing sounds very interesting! We are even now a little nervous that he will take off from high school. I know there are gps runners being made in the US, I emailed them but they didn't reply, which was a bummer. I saw the mobile phone thingy a while back, it was quite expensive to maintain, like $0 per month! I found the escaping/ wandering years very stressful! The general strategies that I used were to make sure that the house was always locked. We put a snib and a dead lock on the front door, and a padlock on our side gate. Remote button for the garage was also put up so that only an adult with a reached out arm could get to it. All those things work well when you are at home! But going out... that gets interesting. Tigger - I would love some more information on the watch if you can find it! | |

| Hi Kathy - Welcome. FIngers crossed I don't have wanderers here although yesterday Hannah was pretty keen to loudly annonce "Shops!" before heading off down our street with her stroller and baby every chance she got. | |

| I asked my friend about the device she was using. Here is a link to it http://www.ion-kids.com/. I think you have to get it from the US but it looks ok. It has a locator as well as an alarm when they wander. My friend didn't use it for long and was not that impressed but I read some of the reviews and they were quite positive. | |

| HI and Welcome Kathy, I can relate to the wandering... I have some Lewis "wandering" stories that will give even the strongest person a heart attack!! Thankfully now at 7 he has pretty much grown out of it... When I say "pretty much" he no longer nicks off from home... or at least hasnt done it in over a year...( I shouldnt speak too soon should I (JINXT) touch wood) But when we go shopping.... OH what a nightmare!! I will share in another thread so as to not hijack this one!! People have sometimes commented that I should be really slim with all the running around after Lewis I do.... My answer is.... COMFORT FOOD !!! Good Luck finding what you want !! I know there wasnt much out there when I looked... | |

| UPDATE: We purchased a loc8ter for Lachlan and Grace, have haven't lost him since! It has been great for just reminding us to KEEP CHECKING on him as the alarm sounds if goes too far - well worth the money!! There is NOTHING available in Australia - go figure (Aussie kids mustn't wander - hahaha) so we had to purchase through the internet overseas. Can't fault the service tho. Ordered on Wednesday received it on Tuesday (I can't get stuff from Perth to Rockhampton that quick!) Thanks for all your replies!! Kath ) Proud mum to Mattehw, Caitlin, Michael, Lachlan (3.5 ds) and Grace (22mths ds) | |
